This month, we were reminded of why awareness matters.
During one of IGP’s Awareness events in a rural village, a man, with tears blurring in his eyes, quietly approached one of our trainers. What he shared next was difficult to hear, but so important.
“I was responsible for the deaths of two of my unborn daughters,” he said.
He went on to explain how his parents’ pressure for a son led to forced sex determination tests (ultrasounds) and two illegal abortions. Though he loved his other two living daughters, he felt powerless against the expectations around him.
“I couldn’t sleep. I felt like my daughters were asking me, ‘Why did you let this happen?’”
Years later, after loss, grief, and regret, he made a decision that changed his life.
After attending IGP’s awareness session in which we teach the laws in place to protect daughters, he committed to speaking out, ensuring no one else around him feels like they should harm their daughters. He promised to protect his daughters and give them the bright future they deserve. Our team is so excited to come alongside this family, and watch them grow!
IGP is dedicated to rescuing girls in India and giving them opportunities for a bright future. We are the sole international humanitarian organization working with grassroots organizations in India to prevent female gendercide and trafficking and to protect and save girls’ lives. Will you join us to ensure girls in India are valued and seen?
